Making Your Voice Heard Through Objections

Objections  provide residents and stakeholders with a formal avenue to express their concerns about proposed developments or rezoning applications. They play a crucial role in ensuring that development decisions are made with due consideration for the interests of the community.

Who Can Object and When

Typically, property owners and residents within a certain radius of a proposed development have the right to object. If you feel affected and can prove that you have a valid interest, you can submit a objection against the application.

Objections are usually submitted during a specific public participation period, allowing ample opportunity for community input. This can range between 28-30 days depending on the specific requirements of the relevant municipality.

Make sure you submit the objection before the closing date.

What should you look out for

Most applications need to be advertised, if you see a noticeboard on the property this means there is most likely a land use application submitted. Registered post and letters also required notifying surrounding property owners of the proposed application.

How to Object Effectively

An Objection does not necessarily need to be in a specific format or style.

Effective objections are well-researched, clearly articulated, and supported by evidence. It’s crucial to understand the relevant planning regulations and to present your concerns in a concise and persuasive manner.

However, Professional or Legal Objections can hold a strategic value to make sure the respective rights of residents or surrounding owners are best protected.
